Frequently Asked Question

A web-based application is not working properly. What can I do?
Last Updated 14 days ago

Introduction

While every website works a little bit differently, here are some general suggestions that may help you resolve issues with web-based applications on your own.

If it is a supported website, or you need help with these steps, you can also submit a ticket to the Tech Support Portal for assistance.

Instructions

1. Access the site with a known good URL

If you're accessing the website from a bookmark or from your history, the URL could contain session-specific data, and could cause issues when accessing the website from a new session.  Try to get the correct URL directly from the source.

2. Log out

Websites typically store your credentials and access as part of your session data when you log in, and may not update your access until you log back in.  Often, you can refresh your session data by logging out, then logging back in.

If you are unable to access the website to see the log out link, try the other steps below.

3. Try a private browsing window

If the issue is being caused by your session data, using a private browsing window or incognito mode should resolve the issue.  These features set up a separate context where your normal browser cookies have no effect, thus forcing you to create a new session.

Consider this method a workaround, not a permanent fix.  However, if this method works, clearing your browser's cookies will fix the issue.

4. Clear your browser's cache and cookies

Old scripts or cookies stored on your computer can interfere with the operation of some websites.  This method clears out any old files or cookies that may be causing issues with the website you're accessing.

5. Contact the website's operator

If all else fails, there may be something wrong with the website.  Most websites have a support channel, be this an e-mail address, web form, or phone number.  Seek this out, and let them know you're having difficulty.

Be conscientious of what personal information you share over side channels, as it may not necessarily be secure.  For example, e-mail is not necessarily encrypted in transit.
