Frequently Asked Question
How do I update software overnight?
Last Updated 3 years ago
Introduction
Schools should have a system in place to ensure their lab computers get updated on a regular basis. This ensures regular maintenance is completed and helps avoid the situation where students get an update prompt as soon as they open a laptop.
Attached is an example worksheet that can be used to ensure all computers have been updated.
The following instructions run Managed Software Center updates and guarantees no users are logged in after updates are completed.
Instructions
- Connect the computer to wall power. This is extremely important because if the computer loses power during an update, it could leave it in a corrupted state.
- Log in to the computer.
- Open the Applications folder. From the Finder, select Go menu > Applications.
- Locate and open the Managed Software Center application.
- Click Categories tab > Self-Service category > Nightly Update item.
- Click the Install button in the top right corner.
- Save and close your work, then click the Proceed button.
- Click the Updates tab. If there is a progress bar, allow it time to complete.
- Click the Log Out and Update button if one appears. Otherwise, click the Update button in the top right corner.
- Make sure the computer fully logs out, then you are done! Updates should complete on their own.
