Frequently Asked Question

How do I add an indirect menu link?
Last Updated 3 years ago

Quick Start

Navigate to the menu edit page, then add the link to the menu.

Introduction

Indirect menu links are not directly associated to nodes or node relationships, but allow you to create multiple menu links to the same content.

Indirect menu links can link to content within the SD59 website, and to other websites.  To link to content on the SD59 website, provide an absolute path for the link (drop https://www.sd59.bc.ca from the front of the URL).  Otherwise, provide the full URL to link to content outside of the SD59 website.

Adding an Indirect Menu Link

  1. Log in to the SD59 website if necessary.

  2. In the grey navigation toolbar across the top, expand Structure, then click on Menus.

  3. Find the menu in question.  Header menus are the menus across the top of the page.  Submenus run down the left side of the page.  To the right of the menu, click the Edit Menu button.

  4. At the top left, click the Add link button.

  5. Fill in the following information:
    1. Link: provide either the full URL or absolute path to the linked content.
    2. Enabled: this should be checked if the menu link is to be visible
    3. Description: this is optional; displayed when the user hovers over the link
    4. Menu link title: this is the text displayed for the link
    5. Parent link: select the menu item you want to place this link under.  In many cases, you will want to select the root menu item, which is the default.
    6. Weight: this affects sort order.  It is recommended to leave the weight at zero here, then reorder the items using the drag handles on the menu list afterwards.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Go back into the menu's Edit Menu page; repeat steps 2-3.

  8. If the menu items are in the wrong order, use the drag handles to the left of each item to reorder them.  Note that this can also change menu item nesting by dragging left/right.  If you reordered items, click the Save button to commit this change.

  9. Go to the page where you expect the menu link to appear, and make sure that the link works.  If you need to adjust the link:
    1. Go back to the Edit Menu page; repeat steps 2-3.
    2. Click the Edit button next to the link.
    3. Modify the link information as needed.
    4. Click Save.
