Frequently Asked Question

How do I add a direct menu link to a menu?
Last Updated 3 years ago

Quick Start

Navigate to the node relationship form, then modify the Menu Settings section.

Introduction

Direct menu links are associated directly to node relationships.  They are the preferred method for linking to content, as they will automatically update when the slug changes (and consequently, the URL to the node relationship).

In terms of limitations, because direct menu links are associated to node relationships, this implies that they can only reference content on the SD59 website.  Additionally, only one direct menu link can be created per node relationship.  Additional links to the node relationship need to be created using indirect menu links.

Adding a Direct Menu Link

If you are adding new content:

  1. Go to the school's front page.

  2. Click Nodes in the navigation links under the school title.

  3. Click the Add New Content button.

  4. Complete the node creation page. For more details on this process, see the appropriate knowledgebase article for the content you are adding.

  5. Click Save to proceed to the node relationship creation page.

If you are editing existing content:

  1. Go to the school's front page.

  2. Click Nodes in the navigation links under the school title.

  3. Locate the content you want to modify. Go to the popup disclosure triangle to the right of the content item, and select Edit Relation.

Next, add the details for the direct menu link:

  • Expand the Menu Settings disclosure triangle.

  • Check the Provide a menu link checkbox to reveal the menu link settings.

  • Enter the text you want to display for the link in the Menu link title field.

  • Enter the text you want to display when the mouse hovers over the link in the Description field. This is an optional, but recommended step.

  • Select where in the menu hierarchy to place the new menu link using the Parent item field.

Usually you will want to select a top level menu to be the parent menu item, which are indicated by surrounding . Be advised that some menu items have similar or identical names, so double-check to make sure you are placing the menu link under the correct parent menu.

  • Generally, you can ignore the Weight field during the creation process. Using the default value of 0 will place the link in alphabetical order unless the weights for that menu have previously been customized. If that is the case, it is easiest to change the order of the menu links after it is created, rather than guessing what the weight value should be.

If you need to enter any other information on the node relationship form, such as a slug, do so, then commit your changes by clicking the Create content item or Save button at the bottom.
